We last covered SMX in April 2023, highlighting its private equity-backed growth strategy through OceanSound Partners. SMX expanded from its Smartronix foundation into more advanced cloud, data, and analytics capabilities with new footholds across U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
Since then, SMX has made significant moves to deepen its digital transformation portfolio, including the recent acquisition of cBEYONData and securing major new contracts, particularly with the DOD.
The FedSavvy Strategies Takeaway
- The cBEYONData acquisition brings immediate value in financial management and ERP modernization for federal agencies, providing SMX with proprietary tools like CFO Control Tower® and cBEYONDLab® that support greater financial transparency, cost savings, and operational readiness.
- SMX continues to execute on its growth strategy by expanding beyond its Smartronix legacy and using private equity-backed capital to strengthen its presence in digital transformation, with a notable push into financial analytics and enterprise SaaS solutions through the cBEYONData acquisition.
- SMX’s LEIA contract win with SOCPAC and USINDOPACOM demonstrates the company’s deepening foothold in the C6ISR mission space, reinforcing its role in advancing digital transformation across Indo-Pacific operations. As a recompete of the earlier C3PO contract, LEIA highlights SMX’s ability to evolve with mission needs—delivering cloud, AI/ML, and data-driven solutions that enhance decision advantage, joint force integration, and operational visibility across defense systems.
- With the opening of its new Fayetteville, NC, facility near Fort Bragg, SMX is investing in Special Operations Forces (SOF) engagement to support its current portfolio and could be used as a sandbox to test and showcase how emerging technologies can support defense programs.
- SMX appears to be strategically positioned to align with the current administration’s defense priorities, with a focus on digital transformation services rather than traditional management consulting. As the government targets cuts in advisory roles through DOGE initiatives, SMX’s operational, execution-driven model mitigates risk, positioning the company for stability and potential growth.
cBEYONData Acquisition: Expanding Financial Transformation Capabilities
In February 2025, SMX acquired cBEYONData, enhancing its digital transformation capabilities with financial analytics and budget management solutions for the DOD, federal civilian agencies, and DHS components. The acquisition brings deep expertise in ERP systems and cloud platforms, along with flagship tools like CFO Control Tower® and cBEYONDLab®, enabling SMX to drive financial transparency and operational efficiency across sectors:
- CFO Control Tower® is an integrated software suite that connects with government ERP systems to provide real-time financial analytics, robust budget planning, and enhanced collaboration and automation.
- cBEYONDLab® is a cloud-hosted demonstration environment allowing agencies to explore and validate ERP-enabled solutions before major investments—reducing costs associated with process redesign and technology adoption.
Growth and Key Wins with U.S. Defense Agencies

Figure 1 – SMX’s top customers by contract spending, FY 2020-2024. Source: sam.gov
The U.S. Department of the Navy is currently SMX’s largest customer, with contract spending growing by 370% over the last five full fiscal years.
The U.S. Department of the Army is also a top customer, although it experienced a 90% decrease over the same period due to a combination of contract endings (e.g., OCIO IT Services contract via legacy Trident Technologies and support services for the Cruise Missile Defense Systems [CMDS] Project Office) and a shift towards efforts like LEIA. Note that SMX formed in 2019 when Smartronix and Trident Technologies – a provider of advanced IT, engineering, and programmatic solutions – merged.
While LEIA receives funding from both the U.S. Army and Navy, the U.S. Army’s contribution is significantly lower, aligning with the program’s U.S Navy-led focus on supporting INDOPACOM initiatives.
Note that SMX previously held a significant presence within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through the Storage on Demand contract, under which SMX deployed storage and backup solutions at VA datacenters using a managed services approach to supply on-demand storage/services within several prescribed storage classes. With the recent loss of this contract, SMX now lacks any prime contract work with the VA.
The U.S. Department of the Interior HQ grew 15% and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also experienced 112% growth since FY 2020.
A sample of SMX’s noteworthy contract wins over the last 12 months includes the following:
- U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC), Long-Range Enterprise Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Activity (LEIA) – In September 2024, SMX was awarded a seven-year, $3.3 billion GSA ASTRO task order to continue supporting the SOCPAC and USINDOPACOM. Under the contract, SMX delivers advanced command, control, communications, computers, cyber-defense, combat systems, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C6ISR) capabilities across multiple domains, leveraging expertise in cloud computing, data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) to enhance ISR and partner nation capacities in the Indo-Pacific region. This award builds upon SMX’s prior work under the Combatant Commands C5ISR-Pacific Operations (C3PO) Support contract, under which SMX managed multiple C5ISR programs within the USINDOPACOM AOR and delivered solutions for airborne, ground, maritime, and space-based C5ISR platforms.
- U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), Departmental Offices, Enterprise Case Management Services (SaaS) – In September 2018, DOI awarded SMX a six-and-a-half-year, $130 million task order under the Foundation Cloud Hosting Services (FCHS) IDIQ that provided enterprise case management services through IT, teleprocessing, timeshare, and cloud computing services. In July 2024, SMX was awarded a seat on the follow-on, 10-year, $2 billion ceiling value Foundation Cloud Hosting Services 2 (FCHS-2) contract vehicle to provide cloud-based licensing and services.
- Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Cloud Governance and Administration of Technology and Engineering (cGATE) Contract – In October 2024, CFTC awarded SMX a five-year, $79 million contract awarded under GSA Alliant 2 to provide cloud-based licensing and services such as services, data management, and security. This work helps the CFTC protect market participants and the public from fraud and manipulation. This work is a continuation of the previous iteration, providing CFTC with cloud hosting services. Additionally, CFTC has grown 263% as a top SMX customer over the last five fiscal years.
New Defense-Centric Investments
In November 2024, SMX announced that they opened a new facility in Fayetteville, NC, near Fort Bragg and Pope Army Air Field, to strengthen collaboration with defense and industry partners. The facility supports experimentation, prototyping, and solution delivery for evolving operational needs. Key features include 24/7 IT and facility security officer support, a dual internet service provider (ISP) failover system, raised floors for advanced communications, and scalable space, enabling secure and accelerated mission outcomes.
This facility suggests an intentional focus on expanding within the Special Operations Forces (SOF) space, especially considering the close proximity of the facility to a key SOF hub. This facility could be a strategic asset in supporting the SOF portfolio and potentially supporting future pursuits in winning back work within the U.S. Army, such as with the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) and U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC).
