In our latest examination of GDIT, we revisit the powerhouse in the technology and defense sector since our last analysis in November 2021. This blog analyzes GDIT’s recent contract victories and the emergence of new intellectual property, offering a comprehensive update on one of your top GOVCON competitors.
Top Customers and Big Wins
In comparing GDIT’s customer portfolio between FY2018-FY2020 and FY2021-2023, we can see that the U.S. Army became the company’s top customer. Other customers rising in GDIT’s portfolio include the U.S. Department of the Air Force, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Customers GDIT has comparatively lost work in include the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), U.S. Department of State, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Some of these changes can be demonstrated through the following recent wins:
- U.S. Department of the Army, Army Contracting Command—Orlando, Mission Training Complex Capabilities Support II (MTCCS II) task order– In December 2023, GDIT won a five-year, $160 million task order under the MTCCS II multiple award IDIQ to train more than 200,000 soldiers at U.S. Army’s III Armored Corps mission training complexes. GDIT provides individual and collective training that integrates the live, virtual and constructive (LVC) environment and delivers technical and logistical support services.
- U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Indian Health Service (IHS), Electronic Health Record (EHR) Modernization– In November 2023, GDIT won a 10-year, $2.5 billion contract to modernize the IHS’s EHR system. IHS provides federal health services to 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives belonging to 574 federally recognized tribes in 37 states. Under the contract, GDIT will replace the agency’s existing health record and patient system with a new cloud-based enterprise EHR system from Oracle Health.
- U.S. Department of the Air Force, Air Force Test Center, Special Access Program (SAP) Security Support Services (SSS) IDIQ – In September 2023, GDIT announced it received all initial task orders on the 10-year, $4.5 billion multiple award Security Support Services (SSS) IDIQ. GDIT is implementing comprehensive security services including information, personnel and communications security and counterintelligence analysis and cybersecurity assessments.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Scientific and Climate Support Contracts– In March 2023, GDIT was awarded two contracts totaling $380 million by the EPA. This includes the two-year, $195 million Superfund Quality and Sample Support (QSS) contract to provide program support and infrastructure through the application of technical, scientific, analytical chemistry and IT services to the EPA Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation. GDIT also received a five-year, $185 million contract to provide technical, cyber, education and program management services to the EPA Water Infrastructure and Cyber Resilience Division. GDIT supports the EPA in building resilience of critical water and wastewater utilities in communities across the nation from natural and manmade disasters, terrorism, cyberattacks and climate change.
New Technologies and Capabilities
GDIT Digital Accelerators
In 2022, GDIT created a set of “Digital Accelerators” to build expertise and solutions around specific technologies, including zero trust, operational artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, multi-cloud management and cybersecurity. Solutions are prototyped and proven in GDIT’s Emerge Labs and are developed specifically for federal and defense operating environments. Examples include:
- Everest Zero Trust – A tailorable solution providing dynamic access to only the data and services where and when users need them, and securely sharing information with mission partners to achieve desired outcomes.
- Hive Multi-Cloud – A solution combining the strengths of different cloud providers and on-premises infrastructure to create a single, unified environment that helps choose the right cloud for each workload to enable easy migration of data, deployment of applications and cost-effective resource management.
- Cove AI – A tool that automates routine tasks, predicts and prevents issues, and provides real-time insights to improve IT performance and reduce costs.
GDIT Emerge Labs
GDIT leverages its Emerge Labs to interact, test and demonstrate investments, collaborate with partners and prototype advanced solutions. This includes the Emerge Innovation Center (EIC) located at GDIT headquarters in Falls Church, VA which is used to develop prototypes and collaborate with clients and technology partners. The EIC and network of Emerge Labs were likely leveraged to help develop “Amelia”, a conversational AI program capable of troubleshooting and resolving commonly asked tech-support questions from sailors, Marines, and civilian personnel, which is now deployed on the company’s Navy Enterprise Service Desk contract. Other Emerge Labs include:
- The Cyber and Zero Trust Emerge Lab houses cyber professionals, architects and systems engineers who design and test advanced solutions enabling customers to establish and mature cyber and zero trust capabilities. This lab was used to build a fully functioning prototype of its Identity, Credential, and Access Management (ICAM) solution for the Department of Defense in 45 days. This is in addition to GDIT’s new cyber facility at Port San Antonio primarily supporting the U.S. Air Force.
- The 5G and Advanced Wireless Emerge Lab operates a 5G environment for testing and demonstrating wireless technologies and applications. GDIT can simulate customers’ environments and validate solutions in this lab before production, and customers can visualize how mobile devices operating on private and public 5G networks can securely connect and protect 5G-enabled devices, data, and applications across the broader enterprise.
- GDIT’s DeepSky Lab serves as a proving ground for teams to collaborate and develop advanced prototypes and solutions using AI and high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities. The lab enables software development in the geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) community through low-to-high development, allowing systems to be developed in unclassified environments and shifted to the classified space to realize cost savings and quickly field tested capabilities. For example, GDIT is using this lab for development support on the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA) Geospatial Intelligence Search and Retrieval (GSR) program.
GDIT appears willing to continue investing in more Emerge Labs as needed to support customer missions. This is demonstrated through the recent U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Consolidated Tower & Surveillance Equipment (CTSE) System Modernization contract, under which GDIT is establishing a new innovation lab to collaborate with CBP, partners and technology vendors to develop prototypes and test new capabilities around border surveillance technology.
