Anduril: A Persistent Product-First Defense Technology Strategy

June 5, 2025Competitive Intelligence, GD4A, MDA, Top GOVCON CompetitorsBrian Lindholm

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company founded in 2017 by Palmer Luckey (founder of Oculus VR), along with several other tech veterans, and headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. The company develops autonomous systems, counter-unmanned aerial systems solutions, AI-enabled command-and-control platforms, and integrated surveillance technologies.

As of December 2024, Anduril boasts more than 3,500 employees and generates approximately $1 billion in annual revenue.

Its defining strategic characteristic is a product-first model. Unlike traditional defense contractors that build to detailed government requirement documents, Anduril privately funds substantial research and development and builds deployable systems before formal program awards.

At the center of this strategy is its flagship software platform, Lattice.

The FedSavvy Strategies Takeaway

  • Anduril fields a growing portfolio of autonomous weapons, C2, and ISR systems, unified by its flagship software, Lattice, which delivers a common operating picture and AI-enabled decision support.
  • The company developed Lattice first, then expanded its capabilities through a series of targeted acquisitions between 2020 and 2025.
  • Anduril has emerged as a leading contender in major programs such as the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), outperforming several traditional defense primes.
  • Its portfolio reflects a focus on advanced autonomy across domains, including aerial and underwater vehicles, counter-UAS systems, and integrated software and sensor platforms for command, control, and persistent surveillance.

Lattice – the AI Center of Anduril Products

Lattice is Anduril’s AI-powered operating system for defense missions. It integrates sensors, autonomous systems, effectors, and operators into a unified command and control (C2) architecture.

Core capabilities include:

  • Real-time sensor fusion
  • AI-driven threat detection and classification
  • Autonomous and human-in-the-loop response workflows
  • Multi-domain data integration across air, land, sea, and cyber
  • Modular interoperability with legacy and modern defense systems

Lattice creates a common operational picture that reduces operator cognitive burden and accelerates decision cycles. Rather than building hardware first and integrating software later, Anduril built Lattice first and layered hardware systems around it.

This software-centric architecture distinguishes Anduril from traditional primes.

How does Lattice integrate across Anduril’s product portfolio?

Copperhead Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

Copperhead is a family of high-speed autonomous underwater vehicles designed for contested maritime environments. Copperhead illustrates how Lattice extends decision dominance beneath the surface.

Lattice provides:

  • Command and control
  • Subsea sensor fusion
  • Autonomous mission execution
  • Persistent undersea surveillance and mine detection workflows

Extended Range Sentry Tower (XRST)

The Extended Range Sentry Tower is a long-range autonomous surveillance and targeting system used for border security and force protection. The system supports unattended operations with persistent wide area awareness.

Lattice functions as:

  • Real-time data processing backbone
  • Detection and tracking engine
  • Integrated targeting and alerting platform

Fury Autonomous Air Vehicle

Fury is a multi-mission Group 5 autonomous air vehicle developed for contested environments.

It is part of the U.S. Air Force Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) initiative and is designed to augment platforms such as:

  • F-22 Raptor
  • F-35 Lightning II

Through manned-unmanned teaming.

Lattice enables:

  • Autonomous ISR missions
  • Adaptive navigation
  • Real-time mission planning
  • Multi-sensor fusion in denied environments

Together, these systems demonstrate that Lattice is not a feature. It is the architectural spine.

Acquisition History

Over the past five years, Anduril has pursued aggressive inorganic growth, acquiring seven companies between 2020 and 2025. These acquisitions expanded its capabilities in autonomous weapons systems, command and control, radar, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

Each acquisition reinforces the Lattice ecosystem rather than creating disconnected product lines.

Klas Acquisition

In May 2025, Anduril acquired Klas, a provider of ruggedized edge computing and tactical communications systems.

Klas is known for its Voyager modular compute and networking platforms, designed to operate in extreme temperatures, high-interference environments, and denied environments. Voyager systems are already deployed within Anduril’s broader mission architecture, including ground, maritime, and air operations, as part of Anduril’s Menace family of systems.

This acquisition strengthened Anduril’s ability to push Lattice compute power to the tactical edge.

Numerica Radar and Command and Control Units

In January 2025, Anduril acquired Numerica Corporation’s radar and command-and-control business units.

The transaction added advanced signal processing algorithms, tracking software, and radar systems that enhance air and missile defense capabilities. Integrating these systems into Lattice expanded Anduril’s battlespace awareness and sensor-to-effector integration capabilities.

The acquisition demonstrates a clear pattern: expand hardware depth while keeping software integration centralized.

Anduril’s Customer Footprint

Anduril’s primary domestic customers are largely within the U.S. Department of War (DoW) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).  Its growing presence in major defense competitions, including the Collaborative Combat Aircraft initiative, places it in direct competition with traditional prime contractors.

The company also performs considerable work for U.S. allies and friendly nations, including the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, and Ukraine.
